Gould’s overtime goal lifts Nyack to dramatic win over Rye

RYE – As teammates rushed her in celebration, all of them swept by a euphoric feeling, Abby Gould said she “wasn’t even thinking” in that moment.

It took a minute, and some of the adrenaline settling, for the Nyack sophomore to appreciate what she did and notice the bit of sentimental symmetry.

Casey Cummings lofted the ball backwards off the draw toward Gould, who raced up field. After taking a second to scan the defense, she made her move, beating two defenders on a drive toward the center before firing the winning goal 26 seconds into overtime.

“Rye is such a great team, such a tough opponent, and we had an opportunity right there,” Gould said after the May 5 victory. “I told myself, ‘We’ve gotta get it now.’”

The RedHawks got it, eking out a dramatic 13-12 win over their girls lacrosse rival in a clash of the local titans that lived up to its billing. And, what’s become a reputation.

Six of their last seven meetings were decided by a goal, including the Section 1 final last spring. And this ending might’ve brought on a little déjà vu as it was Cummings who connected with Abby’s older sister, Kate Gould, for a last-minute goal that delivered the championship. Coincidentally, that game had an identical final score.

“Shoutout to Abby!” Cummings said with a smile. “I didn’t have control of the ball on the draw, but she read it perfectly and got it, then turned it into the game-winning goal. She’s awesome.”

Turning point

Neither team led by more than two and the score was tied nine times, highlighting how evenly matched these teams are.

“It’s always a battle with them and we go goal-for-goal,” RedHawks coach Kathryn Perrella said. “They’re an amazing program. It’s great to have the win, but we know it could’ve easily gone the other way.”

Annie Toulouse’s spectacular jump-shot, which followed a stutter step and dodge on the perimeter, sent Rye to halftime with a 7-5 lead.

Nyack surged briefly in the second half and Cummings put them up 11-9 with 9:07 remaining, capping their run of three straight goals. Rye quickly answered, of course, as Beau Whaling scored twice in 33 seconds.

“There weren’t any nerves because we’re used to these kinds of games against them,” said Abby Gould, who had four goals. “Our mood was like, ‘Come on, let’s go!’”

She retook the lead for Nyack with 5:21 left, but Toulouse tied it at 12, scoring on a low-angle sling into the right corner with 4:07 to go. The Garnets gained, lost and regained possession in the waning seconds of regulation, but a shot at the buzzer narrowly missed high.

Rye won 15 draws through the first three quarters, prompting Perrella at one point to move Cummings out of the circle. Nyack later reversed course, which paid off in overtime.

“Ultimately, we put her back in because she’s experienced and has that emotional drive,” Perrella said of the superstar. “She’s the kind of player who does well in big moments, and she got us the most important draw.”

Takeaways

Nyack and Rye have garnered national recognition, and they sit atop this publication’s power rankings, both previously undefeated against Section 1 competition.

“We only got one chance at Rye this season and, for the seniors, it’d be our last time ever facing them, so we really wanted this,” Cummings said, referring to the teams now competing in different classifications, which precludes a postseason rematch. “Everyone stepped up, and we did just enough to push through.”

Rye likely will be favored to win the Class C section title, likewise for Nyack in Class B. So this meeting was for bragging rights, and part of the teams’ steel-sharpens-steel series as both packed their schedules with difficult games against elite opponents.

A thrilling win in a high-profile game, the players said, boosts their confidence as the regular season nears its conclusion.

“I think we’re where we want to be, getting close to our peak before the playoffs,” Gould said. Among their upcoming opponents is Darien (Connecticut), the team ranked No. 2 in the country by USA Lacrosse Magazine. “That’s what we need, those tough games that push us to be our best.”

Player of the game

Cummings, who still is recovering from an ankle injury suffered three weeks ago, scored two of her four goals in the fourth quarter and won five draw controls. The Syracuse commit was recently selected to participate in the New Balance All-America Lacrosse Senior Game in July.
