If you think that intradivisional politics don’t play a role in how teams utilize their capital in the NFL draft, think again.
In last month’s draft, the Dallas Cowboys, who held the 12th overall pick, were wary that the New York Giants, drafting two spots ahead of them, would snatch up their man — Ohio State safety Caleb Downs.
It was no secret that the Giants had shown interest in Downs, but after another Buckeye stud defender, linebacker Arvell Reese, fell into their laps at No. 5, the Giants were poised to grab Downs as well.
Dallas attempted to get up in front of the Giants via a trade with the Cleveland Browns, who had the ninth overall pick. Cleveland fielded an offer from the Cowboys, but rejected it. They chose Utah offensive tackle Spencer Fano with the pick, instead, figuring the Giants might want him.
The Giants took Miami offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa at No. 10. leaving Downs to Dallas, who sent the No. 12 overall pick and two fifth-round picks to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for No. 11 overall.
