The Broome County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a single tractor trailer on Interstate Route 88 near Exit 3 in Fenton shortly before midnight.

The tractor trailer was discovered over the embankment, sitting on its side in a drainage ditch located on the east side of Route 88, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Road Patrol deputies broke the windshield of the tractor trailer cab, extracted the driver and began CPR until EMS arrived on the scene to continue lifesaving actions, but Chadwick succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

A preliminary investigation by the BCSO Accident Reconstruction Team determined the tractor trailer was traveling west on Route 88, passing the Exit 3 on-ramp, when it drifted from the right lane into the left lane. The tractor trailer continued through the left lane, into the center median and across the eastbound lanes of travel before going off the roadway, turning onto its side and coming to rest in a drainage ditch, the investigation found.

A witness observed the crash and called 911, stated the Sheriff’s Office.

Traffic on Route I-88 E was restricted to one lane of travel until around 5:30 a.m. Dec. 3 as crews dealt with cleanup of the site, which included spilled diesel fuel and antifreeze from the semi-truck.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Port Crane Fire Department, Broome Volunteer Emergency Squad, New York State Department of Transportation, Chenango Bridge Fire, and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Spill Response.
