Sheriff’s deputies said they were called April 23 to a home on Little Church Road for a report of a juvenile suffering burn injuries. Investigators determined the teen had poured gasoline on an outdoor fire, causing an explosion that ignited the gasoline and set him on fire.

The boy suffered partial-thickness burns to a majority of his body and was flown by Mercy Flight Central to Strong Memorial Hospital, authorities said.

Adult also injured while helping extinguish flames

During efforts to put out the flames, Kristen Wildrick, 51, of Stanley, sustained burn injuries to her arm and foot, the sheriff’s office said. She was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital by Stanley Hall Gorham Ambulance.

Teen later dies from injuries

The sheriff’s office said the teen was initially listed in critical condition in the ICU Burn Unit. In an update, officials said the 15-year-old succumbed to his injuries and died May 8 at Strong Memorial Hospital.

The incident was investigated by the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office and was determined to be accidental and not suspicious. Stanley Fire Department and Hall Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
