Corning junior Cella McLaughlin swept Federation and public schools titles in the 100-meter hurdles on a weekend she broke two Section 4 records at the New York State Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Middletown High School.
McLaughlin broke the 14-second mark in winning the Class A girls 100-meter hurdles race Saturday, June 14 with a time of 13.92 seconds.
Later in the day, she took first in the Federation (overall) 100 hurdles final with a time of 14.0.
Coming into the season, the Section 4 record in the 100 hurdles was 14.2 by Waverly’s Patti Diedrich in 2002. McLaughlin topped that multiple times.
In competition Friday, McLaughlin placed second in Class A and third overall in the long jump with a top effort of 19 feet, 8.75 inches. She broke the section record of 19 feet, 6 inches, set in 2009 by Sidney’s Ashley Mahlmeister.
During the winter season, McLaughlin won the state public schools title in the 55 hurdles with a time of 8.03 seconds.
Chenango Valley sophomore Mack Patterson was also an overall and class state champion. He topped the Class B field in the shot put with a top distance of 59 feet, 10.75 inches that led all three classes.
Patterson placed second in Class B in the boys discus with a throw of 169 feet, 11 inches, which ranked third overall.
