As fast as they fly, it’s almost always under the radar.
Since schools don’t own ski mountains — at least not schools in Section 1 — there are no actual home meets, no opportunities to pack stands and celebrate great athletic performances.
Still, whether it’s the lure of speed or something else, local high school skiing continues to draw good talent, as evidenced in part by medals won at the state championships.
Two of this year’s medalists were Scarsdale’s Stella Van Arsdale and Brewster’s Derrick Crivelli.
The two, who were this season’s Section 1’s girls and boys skimeisters for the lowest combined time of two slalom and two giant slalom runs, went on to medal at the state championships.
Below, find recaps of the seasons of Van Arsdale and Crivelli, The Westchester/Putnam Girls and Boys Skiers of the Year, had, as well a list of all the local skiing all-stars.
Stella Van Arsdale
Westchester/Putnam Girls Skiier of the Year
School: Scarsdale
Year: Senior
Highlights: Van Arsdale, who has been skiing since she was 4 years old, ski racing since 6 and was a state medalist as a sophomore, took the Section 1 girls skimeister title with the lowest combined two slalom and two giant slalom run times. She won the Section 1 girls giant slalom crown and was second in slalom to 2025 skimeister Maggie Roseberry. Van Arsdale was the only Section 1 skier this year — boy or girl — to medal at the state championships in both giant slalom and slalom. She was fifth out of 63 starters in GS and ninth out of the 63 in slalom. Skiing is probably not even Van Arsdale’s best sport. She’ll play soccer this coming fall for the University of Rochester. That doesn’t mean her skiing career is over, though. She also plans to compete for her college club skiing team,

Derrick Crivelli
Westchester/Putnam Boys Skiier of the Year
School: Brewster
Year: Freshman
Highlights: Unless plans change, Derrick Crivelli is probably going nowhere for a long time. That’s good for Brewster and good, overall, for Section 1 skiing, but perhaps not so good for other boys who have their eyes on Section 1’s top prize. Crivelli joined a long list of accomplished skiers from the section, including his brother, Lucas, in winning the boys Section 1 skimeister title, which reflects having the lowest combined time of two slalom and two giant slalom runs at the Section 1 skiing championships. He then went on to the state championships, where he medaled in sixth place in giant slalom but saw his fourth-place slalom finish vanish due to a disqualification for straddling a gate. Freshmen boys don’t usually find podiums, although Lucas was also Section 1 skimeister and a state medalist as a freshman. The younger Crivelli, who has been both pushed and supported by his siblings (sister Mia was also a medalist at states) did something neither sibling did in winning both the boys Section 1 slalom and giant slalom titles. And besting them is saying something, since in 2023, Mia was Westchester/Putnam Girls Skier of the Year and Derek gained the same honor for boys. With Derrick, the best may be yet to come.
