Thursday’s games

Mahopac shuts out Fox Lane 13-0

BEDFORD — Fox Lane did something Thursday no other team had done against Mahopac ace Nick Masciarelli this season.

It got a hit.

In fact, it got two.

But that was the only offense the Foxes mustered in a game that started with the promise of being a great early-season test for both teams and ended in a five-inning, mercy-rule-ended 13-0 rout by Mahopac of last year’s state Class AA finalist.

Center stage was the hard-throwing Masciarelli, who’s now 3-0, and who helped his own cause with a third-inning two-run blast over the leftfield wall. That homer gave Mahopac a 3-0 lead.

Before the inning was over, Mahopac had chased starter Gavin Mammola (four earned runs in two-plus innings) and had gone up 8-0 with the help of four walks, an error and a bases-clearing, three-run, opposite field double by Mahopac catcher Drew Lichtenberger..

The damage didn’t end until Foxes first baseman Andrew Brauning’s outstanding diving grab of Masciarelli’s, opposite-field liner in the first base-second base hole.

What it means

Mahopac, which will host another Section 1 power in Ketcham next week, raised its season mark to 5-0.

Fox Lane, which is clearly feeling the impact of graduation losses, fell to 0-3.

Player of the game

Masciarelli’s batterymate, Lichtenberg, got Mahopac on the board with a first-inning sacrifice fly. He also drew two walks (including one before Masciarelli’s blast); and he displayed an absolute cannon of an arm in cutting down Jackson Carroll on an attempted steal of second in the second inning.

But the top-player nod went to Masciarelli, whose control of his low-90s fastball, his slider and his occasional curve was impressive as he quickly went through the Foxes batting order. He didn’t walk anyone and struck out seven.

In addition to his home run, he scored after one of the two walks he earned.

The senior, who has not yielded a run this season, has committed to pitch next year for Wagner College.

Other highlights

Brauning had a second, full-extension, diving stop for the Foxes in the fourth inning (this on a scorched, one-hopper in the hole) and Fox Lane centerfielder Janak Bain made a fine running catch in deep left-center of a Mike D’Amore bid for extra bases during the Pac’s five-run fifth.

Walks, an error, a wild pitch and infield hits contributed to that fifth inning for Mahopac. The big blow in it was RJ Grabekellis’s two-out, two-run single to center.

They said it

Masciarelli attributed his success in getting outs to “attacking the batters” and trusting the pitch selections coming from the bench.

“I was attacking with the fastballs a lot but the slider is really the bread and butter because it keeps them off the fastball and it’s got good movement on it, Masciarelli said.

While happy with his home run, which he said he knew was gone from the feel off the bat, Masciarelli said, “I definitely take greater joy in my pitching”

“Being able to go five innings and stay in the game, even though we’re up 13-0, is really impressive for me because I’m a fiery player, ” he said.
