Slab of ice from tractor trailer shatters pick-up truck's windshield on I-81

A slab of ice flew off a tractor trailer and broke through a pick-up truck’s windshield, injuring a man from Oneida County, according to the New York State Police.

At around 12:35 p.m. Jan. 30, the troopers responded to a call for a vehicle with a shattered windshield due to ice falling off of a tractor trailer while on Interstate 81 northbound in the Town of Homer, about 30 miles south of Syracuse.

An investigation confirmed the incident, which damaged the Chevrolet pick-up truck. The pick-up truck’s driver side front window and windshield were shattered.

Police say the driver of the tractor trailer did not stop.

The driver of the pick-up truck, a 23-year-old from Camden, suffered hand and facial injuries. According to a statement, troopers reminded residents of the importance of cleaning off snow from vehicles to prevent accidents.

The driver was checked out by EMS at the scene and he did not wish to go to the hospital.

The investigation is on-going.
