Talk about a catch of the day. ShopRite of Carmel got a very special delivery earlier this week when the regular shipment to their seafood department included an incredibly rare golden lobster.
Seafood Manager Anthony Galella said he and his team — who named the lobster Jerry— were amazed to receive such an unusual and beautiful lobster, especially as the likelihood of finding one is one in 30 million.
According to the National Science Foundation, a genetic mutation that alters the way pigments are expressed in the lobster’s shell give them their unique color.
“It was truly a golden moment,” he said. “Jerry quickly became a store celebrity, and we knew right away he deserved a special home” — as in, not behind the counter or on someone’s dinner plate.
Instead, Jerry is now safely ensconced at the Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut where Galella hopes he’ll continue to bring joy to others, just like he did in Carmel.
