A New York state Department of Transportation culvert project will force the closure of Route 36 in the Town of Canisteo for up to a few months.

The transportation department said Route 36 near the county Route 21 intersection will be closed to traffic beginning Tuesday, June 2, to accommodate the culvert replacement work.

During the closure, motorists are advised to follow the posted detour utilizing county Route 21.

State transportation officials said travelers should expect delays and they are encouraged to seek alternate routes if necessary.

According to the DOT, the project is scheduled to be completed by the end of September. Construction activities are weather dependent and subject to change based on conditions.

There will be no on-site detour available during the closure. Motorists are advised to use Feenaughty Hill Road as the designated detour route and should plan for additional travel time in the area.
