The Brooklyn Nets are coming off a 2025-26 NBA season in which they finished with a lowly 20-62 record that ultimately awarded them with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. Brooklyn is likely hoping to improve the team as much as possible given that they don’t have the rights to their own first-round pick in 2027 and it seems like they’re taking care of business.
The Nets extended a Two-Way qualifying offer to forward Chaney Johnson on Saturday, according to a report from Keith Smith of Spotrac. As Smith pointed out in his post on X, Johnson is now a restricted free-agent, meaning that other teams could make offers to him in free-agency, but the Nets have the opportunity to match the offer due to the restricted status.
Johnson, 24, played 17 games for the Nets last season and he averaged 8.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 54.3% from the field and 30.0% from behind the three-point line. Johnson began the season by signing a Two-Way contract with Brooklyn towards the end of December and while he spent most of his time with the G League team in Long Island., he showed what he was capable of during his time on the NBA stage.
While this move doesn’t guarantee that Johnson will be back with the Nets next season, this is the next step to pave the way for him to be back with Brooklyn. Time will tell if Johnson will see more playing time next season given that the Nets just added three more players to the team through the 2026 NBA Draft, but he should be in a good spot to continue his development.
