NFC executive: I'd watch out for the New York Giants in 2025

The New York Giants are at a crossroads. After another depressing season in which they finished 3-14 in 2024, many experts are finding it difficult to predict anything but more pain for the century-old NFL franchise.

But those who are looking a bit deeper see the Giants as an ascending team. They have drafted well two years straight, and general manager Joe Schoen has been strategically filling key needs through free agency.

The Giants were 3-14 last year, but could have been closer to a .500 team with a few breaks. They lost eight games by one score or less. Split those games, and they are 7-10 instead of 3-14.

Veteran NFL reporter Matt Lombardo writes that the Giants are on some executive’s radar as a team to watch out for this year.

“I’d watch out for the Giants,” a rival NFC Executive told me recently, when asked to identify the team he believes could surprise to the upside this fall. “Because of their additions at quarterback, and upgrades along the offensive line. Besides, they can’t really be worse than they were last year.”

Good points all around. The Giants have gone from a quarterback room of Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, and Tommy DeVito to Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and rookie Jaxson Dart (although DeVito is still around).

One of the key additions many experts are interested in seeing in action is top draft pick Abdul Carter, the pass-rushing linebacker out of Penn State. He is said to be a “generational” player, much like his predecessor at Happy Valley, Pro Bowler Micah Parsons.

Carter solidifies an already formidable defensive front seven that consists of Dexter Lawrence, Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux, Bobby Okereke, and rookie Darius Alexander.

As for the offense, the Giants plan on starting Wilson at quarterback. He was the best deep thrower in the NFL last season, and now he joins the Giants, who were one of the worst deep-throwing teams in the league. They will be more dynamic in 2025.
