A 34-year-old Newburgh man died while cliff diving at Fishkill Creek.
At 7:34 p.m. June 25, City of Beacon Police, Fire and EMS were dispatched to the area near 508 Fishkill Ave. for a report of a person who dove into the creek and didn’t resurface.
Witnesses at the scene said Vincent Javinett jumped off the cliff into the water and he had not resurfaced after several minutes.
Given the amount of time Javinett was underwater, Beacon Police said there was no chance of survival. Beacon firefighters entered the water to attempt a recovery but could not locate him.
New York State Police eventually dispatched a dive team, and Javinett’s body was recovered from the water.
Beacon Police said their investigation — including video evidence from the scene — determined “beyond a doubt, that the incident was a tragic accident.”
“Our thoughts and sympathies go out to Mr. Javinett’s family and loved ones,” Beacon Police Chief Thomas Figlia said in a statement. “As this tragedy confirms, cliff diving into Fishkill Creek is extremely dangerous and it should never be attempted.”
