A 17-year-old boy died following an officer-involved shooting in Dutchess County early Saturday, and the incident is now under investigation by the New York State Attorney General’s Office.
Here’s what we know.
What happened?
Authorities released few details about what led to the shooting, which occurred early Saturday, June 27, near East Main and Market streets in the village of Wappingers Falls.
“During that incident, law enforcement discharged their firearms,” the Wappingers Falls Police Department said in a news release. “Tragically, a 17-year-old male lost his life during the encounter.”
Police have not said what led officers to use deadly force. The teenager’s name has not been released.
Officials said there was no active threat to the public following the shooting.
Police commissioner offers condolences
Wappingers Falls Police Commissioner Dave Fisher expressed sympathy to the teenager’s family.
“On behalf of members of the Wappingers Falls Police Department, I extend my sincere condolences to the family and friends of this young man,” Fisher said. “Our thoughts are with all those whose lives have been affected by this tragic incident.”
Investigation underway
The New York State Attorney General’s Office is investigating the shooting, as required under state law for incidents in which police actions result in a death.
