New York Jets' Justin Fields leads all NFL quarterbacks in key stat after Week 1

By now you’re aware that New York Jets starting quarterback Justin Fields was pretty excellent in Week 1’s 34-32 Week 1 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Fields completed roughly 73% of his passing attempts (16-of-22), for 218 yards and a touchdown, and also scrambled for 48 yards and two additional scores. Advanced stats have slowly been trickling out that highlight how impactful he was.

Fields was the Jets’ third-highest graded player on offense, according to Pro Football Focus. The dual-threat scrambler received national attention on The “Rich Eisen Show,” where he was praised for his performance versus the Steelers. And now there’s another key stat available that shines more light on Fields’ showing.

Fields led all passers in Week 1 in Expected Points Added (EPA) per dropback, according to next Gen Stats. He was also 10th-best in Total QBR (79.4), the seventh-highest mark in a game in his career, per ESPN:

Fields’ 8.6 average air yards per completion (CAY) was second-best behind Geno Smith, also per NGS. His 119.1 passer rating was fifth-highest, and his 72.7% completion percentage was 8.3 points higher than his expected completion percentage (xCOMP%) of 64.5. Fields was completing difficult throws.

Fields will attempt to continue his momentum going in a difficult Week 2 matchup versus the Buffalo Bills.

Jets Wire will continue to provide updates throughout the 2025 season.
