New York Giants will conduct 'full review' of Joe Schoen after the season

As the New York Giants navigate a turbulent 2025 season, general manager Joe Schoen faces a pivotal end-of-year evaluation, reports The Athletic’s Dianna Russini. The review, led by co-owner John Mara and team brass, will assess the organization’s future direction amid ongoing struggles.

Schoen, who is in the fourth year of a five-year contract that expires after 2026, was retained following Monday’s abrupt firing of head coach Brian Daboll after a disheartening 24-20 loss to the Chicago Bears. Daboll’s dismissal caps a dismal 2-8 start that extended the Giants’ road losing streak to 11 games, erasing the promise of his 2022 debut that earned him AP Coach of the Year honors.

For now, Schoen spearheads the search for Daboll’s successor, with offensive coordinator Mike Kafka serving as interim head coach. However, Russini reports no substantive discussions yet between ownership and Schoen on desired head coaching traits, signaling caution. “Long-term certainty isn’t guaranteed,” she noted.

I’m also told there haven’t been any serious meetings yet between ownership and GM Joe Schoen about the traits they want in the next head coach, though Schoen is leading the search. He’s on a five-year deal set to expire after 2026, so long-term certainty isn’t guaranteed. Schoen will get a full review at the end of the season, as John Mara and Giants brass evaluate the best course of action for the future of the organization. Still, most around the league think Schoen will be safe because of how highly he’s regarded by ownership.

Mara acknowledged Schoen’s talent-building efforts in a statement following Daboll’s termination.

“We feel like Joe has assembled a good young nucleus of talent, and we look forward to its development,” Mara said. “Unfortunately, the results over the past three years have not been what any of us want. We take full responsibility for those results and look forward to the kind of success our fans expect.”

League insiders remain optimistic about Schoen’s job security, citing his strong rapport with ownership. Still, the full review looms as a critical juncture for a franchise desperate for resurgence.
