The New York Giants defense spent the offseason adding some new faces in hopes of taking a major step forward during the upcoming season.
Not only did New York add some vital pieces to the secondary in free agency, such as cornerback Paulson Adebo and safety Jevon Holland, but they also added a blue-chip prospect to the pass rush when they selected Abdul Carter with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft.
When looking at the top defenses primed to break out in 2025, The Athletic’s Ted Nguyen included the Giants as a unit to keep an eye on.
The Giants finished 28th in DVOA last year, but the tools are there to make a significant jump. However, they have the hardest schedule in the league on paper and they need the offense to help get opponents in passing situations. The only major upgrade on that side was signing quarterback Russell Wilson (the plan is to let first-round pick Jaxson Dart sit and develop). There’s potential for a breakout here, but it may not be significant enough to make a major difference in the win/loss column in 2025.
Entering the second season under defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, the Giants have a handful of pieces that need to integrate into the scheme rather quickly. With that said, there’s clearly an increased level of talent at all three levels.
There are a handful of factors that will drive the defense’s results, but the entire unit will be based on the backbone of the pass rush, which should feature a quartet of strong assets leading the way.
With several question marks facing the Giants this offseason, the defense is one area that seems to have a more positive outlook than other parts of the roster.
