New York Giants' Brian Daboll on Jaxson Dart being QB2: 'We'll see'

The New York Giants had a major overhaul at the quarterback position this offseason. From the moment they traded up and selected quarterback Jaxson Dart with the 25th overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, head coach Brian Daboll has been consistent in his claim that Russell Wilson was the starting quarterback.

Despite Dart’s impressive preseason, Wilson remains the Giants’ starter. Now the question becomes: Who will serve as the backup quarterback behind Wilson?

Daboll was asked about Dart over the weekend and the possibility of the rookie being the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart.

“He’ll be practicing and doing the things he needs to do to keep improving. Backup quarterback, we’ll have a number of them. We’ll continue to work with all those guys,” he said.

Daboll was again pressed about the backup spot on Sunday afternoon and was noncommittal.

“We’ll see,” he said.

After Dart impressed in Week 2 of the preseason, rumors began to fly about the potential of Jameis Winston, but that idea was completely shot down by assistant general manager Brandon Brown last week.

If the Giants get out to a bad start to the season, Dart could very well end up being the starter toward the back half no matter where he lands on the official depth chart.

It will also be interesting to see how many quarterbacks the Giants end up keeping on the roster. It may seem crazy on the surface for Big Blue to retain four quarterbacks, but they may end up doing so if they want to keep the camaraderie alive in the quarterback room.

There is an argument to be made for Dart remaining the third-string quarterback and learning behind the two veteran free agent acquisitions. However, it’s hard to argue that the rookie hasn’t earned at least some consideration to be the backup behind Wilson.

This is a good problem for the Giants and Daboll to have, and it will certainly be interesting to see what the official depth chart looks like ahead of Week 1.
