The unveiling of the new and improved playground at the Children’s Home of Wyoming Conference builds on the inclusive learning environments for children enrolled in the education program and campus-operated congregate care programs.
To show their appreciation, students from the Children’s Home presented Broome County Executive Jason Garnar with a colorful “Thank You” card with construction paper hearts and messages of gratitude.
“A lot of these kids come from tough situations…so anytime that you can make kids happy like this, it’s like a bonus, and I’m just glad to play a small role in it,” Garnar said after the ribbon cutting.
In a press release announcing the expansion of the nonprofit’s footprint, President and CEO of CHWC George Dermondy shared his excitement. “We are thrilled to officially open this playground for the children and families we serve,” he said. “This project reflects our Mission of cultivating healthy relationships for positive futures. We are grateful to Broome County Executive Garnar and Legislator Micha for their support through grant funding.”
Dermondy said the playground is “bigger and better and more opportunity for play” for the 105 students who attend the Children’s Home school. The new playground features three swing sets (one with landing pads), slides, a climber, and a jungle gym.
Now students don’t have to form a line waiting to get a chance to swing. With the addition of two swing sets, there are plenty to go around.
Delta architects and engineers assisted with the playground mapping and ensuring all equipment is up to code regulations, along with hiring a professional installation company to ensure the safety of children as they explore the latest improvements.
Funding to support the playground upgrade was provided by the 2025 Broome County Small Community Fund contributing $15,000 to the estimated total of $45,000. For Garnar, the expansion of the Children’s Home playground was the “perfect” example of using the Small Community Fund to cover the cost of something that benefits residents in the area.
Dermondy said the playground fits right into the philosophy of the Children’s Home of creating a space where children can thrive. “School isn’t always easy for some of the young people who come to our school and this provides them just another opportunity to succeed and to be happy.”
