Motorcyclist seriously injured in Big Flats crash on Interstate 86

A motorcycle operator was seriously injured Tuesday morning when he tried to avoid a collision following another crash between a vehicle and a deer on Interstate 86 in the Town of Big Flats.

Around 8:22 a.m. on May 19, a deputy was dispatched to the scene of a motor vehicle accident in the eastbound lane of I-86 between exits 50 and 51A in Big Flats, according to the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office.

While emergency personnel were on the scene, a 37-year-old male, whose name has not been released, was involved in a separate crash and suffered what the sheriff’s office described as life-threatening injuries.

The sheriff’s office Criminal Investigation Division was called to the scene to assist with the investigation into the crashes.

Investigators determined there was high traffic density at the time with several vehicles abruptly braking after the car-deer collision.

The motorcycle operator hit his brakes to avoid collision with another vehicle, but then lost control of the bike, investigators said. He was thrown from the motorcycle and landed in the roadway.

The victim was taken to Guthrie Corning Hospital and later transferred to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre for medical treatment. His condition has not been released.

The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by New York State Police, the Big Flats Fire Department, Erway Ambulance, state Department of Transportation and Rinwalske Towing.
