Micah Fox, Maya Rothstein are Rockland's top skiers

There are all kinds of way to define success. For Rockland skiers this season, the definition, unfortunately, didn’t include qualifying to compete at the state championships.

But that didn’t substantially subtract from strong performances. Two, in particular, stood out. They belong to familiar names.

This year’s Rockland Girls and Boys Skiers of the Year are Clarkstown North’s Maya Rothstein and Suffern’s Micah Fox of Suffern.

This is the third straight year Fox has won the award. He shared it two years ago with his older brother, Zeke, before winning it solo last year.

For Rothstein, this is the second straight year she has gained the girls top Rockland spot.

Below are capsule reports on both, as well as the overall skiing all-stars from Rockland, Westchester and Putnam counties.

Maya Rothstein

Rockland Girls Skier of the Year

Year: Sophomore

School: Clarkstown North

Highlights: She qualified for the Section 1 championships this season as the 14th highest ranked skier out of more than 70 girls. She matched her bib number by finishing 14th in the competition for Section 1 girls skimeister. That may sound pretty good but not overly impressive until you consider that to be in the hunt for that much-sought title, a skier must be reckless enough to be fast but not reckless enough to fall or to miss a gate. Multiple more seasoned skiers fell out of the competition because it requires times for both slalom and both giant slalom runs, which are then added together with the lowest time gaining the crown.

Micah Fox

Rockland Boys Skier of the Year

School: Suffern

Year: Senior

Highlights: A four-year skier for the Mounties, Fox wrapped up his competitive ski career with a solid performance. Entering sectionals with the No. 17 bib, he finished 10th in the boys skimeister competition with four solid runs that were only a split second off from each other in slalom and GS. Fox will attend the University of Hartford next fall, where he hopes to walk on to the baseball team. But it doesn’t appear likely he’ll forget his last day skiing for Suffern. “I’d say the moment I’ll remember most was at the end of sections this year and how bittersweet it was to have to say goodbye to all the athletes and coaches from other schools that I’d gotten so close with the last four years. It was very emotional — I was choked up,” Fox said. “I was said but it also was a realization of how lucky I am to have taken part in such a great thing, and (to have) me such wonderful people.”
