Macy’s to close 14 stores nationwide, including one in New York

Macy’s is closing a store in Amherst, New York, as part of a broader effort to reduce its nationwide footprint and refocus on long-term growth.

The department store chain confirmed that its Macy’s location at 1255 Niagara Falls Blvd. in Amherst will be among 14 stores closing across the country, according to a list first reported by Axios and confirmed by the company to USA TODAY.

“Macy’s, Inc. continues to execute its Bold New Chapter strategy, making targeted adjustments to its store footprint to better serve customers and support long-term growth,” the retailer said in an emailed statement Jan. 9. “These actions allow us to reinvest in go-forward stores and digital capabilities.”

The Amherst closure comes even as Macy’s has reported recent sales momentum. In a December memo to employees, CEO Tony Spring said the company’s strategy is showing “measurable progress,” citing strong customer response, record Net Promoter Scores and improved results through the first three quarters.

“We have made meaningful progress and remain clear-eyed about the work ahead,” Spring said.

The Amherst location is the only New York store included in the latest round of closures.
