CANANDAIGUA, NY — To paraphrase vocalist Don Henley, the boys and girls of summer have gone, or they will be after 4 p.m. Aug. 24.
That’s when the swim beach at Kershaw Park in Canandaigua will be closing for the season, a little over a week prior to the traditional Labor Day weekend closing — the unofficial end of summer.

City Manager John Goodwin said at a City Council meeting earlier in the week that each year the city tries to encourage lifeguard staff to stay longer, but the college students and high school athletes have to head back to school and fall sports practices.
“We just don’t have the proper staffing to remain open safely,” Goodwin said.
The city did post a message in conveying the news on its Facebook page: “Thank you for an amazing summer and we look forward to seeing you next year!”
Next year, in terms of the Kershaw swim beach, comes Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial beginning of summer.
That’s only nine months away.
