Info session on Oscaleta Road culvert project scheduled for March 26

A temporary repair is expected to be installed at the Oscaleta Road culvert in South Salem after a portion of the road partially collapsed Sunday, March 15.

A community info session about the project is scheduled for 7 p.m., Thursday, March 26 at Lewisboro Court building on the Lewisboro Elementary School campus in South Salem. New updates to the culvert construction plans are expected to be discussed.

According to a Facebook post written by Lewisboro Town Supervisor Tony Goncalves, Oscaleta Road between Twin Lakes Road and South Shore Drive is still closed, but three culvert pipes were delivered Monday, March 23 to be installed under a temporary single-lane roadway while the New York State Department of Transportation works with a local contractor to approve a permanent solution.

Debris was cleared from the land Tuesday, March 17 to increase water flow between Lake Oscaleta and Lake Waccabuc and to prepare for the temporary repair.

Goncalves said the collapsed culvert had already been planned to be replaced thanks to $1.4 million from a New York State Department of Transportation Bridge NY grant awarded to Tectonic Builders Inc., an Ardsley-based contractor.

Construction on the project based on the original schedule was supposed to begin in 2027, but Goncalves said Town of Lewisboro officials met with NYSDOT and Tectonic and determined the town could implement a NYSDOT-approved pre-cast concrete box culvert for a permanent solution.

According to Goncalves, going forward with the pre-approved NYSDOT design would “shave potentially one year off the original project schedule,” as opposed to using Tectonic’s proposed design. On March 20, the new plans were approved by the NYSDOT and Goncalves said work is expected to begin in the coming weeks.

As of Thursday, the temporary culvert repair has not yet been completed.
