Hudson Valley fall foliage: Send us your autumn photos, see how to track leaf changes

Autumn is finally arriving in New York. Volunteers have reported seeing slight spots of yellow leaves on trees in the Adirondacks and other areas upstate, which means spectacular outdoor views will start to develop.

The I Love NY fall foliage tracker allows visitors to monitor autumn leaf progress every week during the fall season, with the latest report posted on Sept. 10. Leaf progress is color-coded, with green showing “no change” in foliage progress, yellow showing that leaves are “just changing,” and scaling all the way to dark red for “past peak” foliage.

Fall foliage progress in New York State for week of Sept. 10-16

As the season has just begun, most of New York State’s trees are still green. However, parts of the Adirondacks and the Catskills regions have shown signs of color.

Some parts of the Adirondacks near Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington are showing a 20% change in leaf color, with muted orange, red and yellow leaves. Closer to the Canadian border in St. Lawrence County, some volunteers have also spotted a 20% change with muted red and purple leaves.

The Catskills region has shown some of the most significant changes this week. Some trees have developed bright yellow leaves already in Delaware and Greene counties, with 15% of trees exhibiting minor color near Delhi and Windham.

Forestburgh in Sullivan County is only reporting a 5% change, but near Liberty, red and orange leaves have been observed.

In Westchester, Putnam and Rockland, most trees are still sporting green leaves, but a 5% change has been observed near Nyack and Orangeburg.

Farther north in other parts of the Mid-Hudson Valley, Ulster County has reported a 5% change in leaf color, with trees near Kingston exhibiting some yellow leaves.

Dutchess County and Orange County have also only reported a 5% change in leaf color near Poughkeepsie and Washingtonville.

Check back each week for more updates on where to find the most breathtaking fall views in the state.
