As families prepare to escape the harsh winter over February break, AAA sketched out what travelers can expect to spend in money and time to get to their destinations.
How crowded will airports be?

Airports are expected to be extremely busy next week, especially for early morning flights, AAA experts said. Travelers should plan arrive at least 90 minutes before their flights. AAA also recommends downloading the airline’s app for real-time updates regarding their flight status.
What are gas prices like in Rochester, NY right now?
For the families that will be staying closer to home, AAA expects roads to be thawed, but recommends drivers visit 511NY.org to stay up to date on road conditions.
The national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $2.875, a marked decrease from last year. In 2025 around this time, the price was $3.10. The New York average went up two cents to $2.99, though it is still just below the $3 per gallon threshold.

Where are people traveling for February break?
According to AAA, cruising will be the top option for travelers, with 21.7 million Americans taking cruises this year, 1 million more than in 2025.
“Cruising is ideal for multi-generational travel, which is a popular trend as families look to make memories together,” said Director of Travel at AAA Western and Central New York, Josie Nicotra, in a statement.
The Caribbean is the most popular destination for 72% of U.S. passengers, making Miami, Port Canaveral, and Fort Lauderdale, all in Florida, the busiest cruise ports in the world.
