New York metro area temperatures have been hovering in the 60s and 70s, but a sharp warmup is expected to begin Sunday as heat and humidity surge across the East Coast.
Forecasters say the region will shift quickly from springlike conditions to early summer heat, with highs reaching the upper 80s and 90s in parts of the Northeast.

New York City is expected to see highs ranging from the mid-80s Sunday into the low 90s by early next week.
AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Adam Douty said the shift will feel abrupt after a relatively cool stretch.
“It will feel like a flip of a switch across the Northeast starting this weekend, with temperatures jumping from springlike levels to midsummer territory,” Douty said.

What to expect next
While temperatures spike early next week, some relief is possible by midweek as scattered showers move through the region, slightly easing the heat.
Even so, conditions are expected to remain warmer than average across much of the Northeast through the middle of the week.
