Here are the candidates on the ballot for Chemung County voters on Nov. 4 election day

A three-way race for City of Elmira Court judge is the main event of the Nov. 4 election contests in Chemung County.

Voters in various towns around the county will also have to choose among candidates for town board and other offices. There are no countywide races this year.

The most high-profile race is the contest for the seat of longtime City of Elmira Court Judge Steven Forrest, who is retiring at the end of the year.

Potential successors to Forrest are Daniel J. Cain, who is running on the Democratic, Working Families and Cain For Elmira party lines; Republican Jordan J. Yorke, who is also running on the Conservative and Justice For All party lines; and Robert D. Siglin, who appears on the Elmira First Party line.

Cain, a Chemung County native, has practiced law for 19 years and has diverse legal experience as a principal court attorney in Chemung County Court, part-time assistant corporation counsel for the City of Elmira, and in private practice with Elmira law firms.

Yorke, born and raised in Elmira, currently serves as assistant corporation counsel for the City of Elmira, handling litigation and advising city personnel on legal matters. Previously, he spent six years as an assistant district attorney in the Chemung County District Attorney’s Office.

Siglin, also an Elmira native, is an administrative law judge with the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. He also served as a prosecutor in the Chemung County District Attorney’s Office and as an assistant Chemung County attorney, and spent time in private practice in Elmira.

Other Chemung County races

Residents in several Chemung County towns will have an opportunity to decide contested races for various town government positions.

In the Town of Chemung, longtime incumbent Republican Town Supervisor George R. Richter faces a challenge from Lois M. Mazzarese, who is running on the Common Sense Party line.

There are also three candidates seeking two available Town Board seats, including Republicans Michael G. Bernatavitz and Dennis M. Brown, and Common Sense Party candidate Marshall French.

In the Town of Horseheads, five people are vying for two available seats on the Town Board.

Candidates are Democrats Miriam Osorio and Sebastian Mathews, former Horseheads village Mayor Donald Zeigler, who is running on the Conservative Party line, and Republicans Arthur Laurey and Joseph Brennan. Brennan and Laurey are also listed on the No Fluoride Party line, and Laurey is also running on the Conservative Party line.

There is also a crowded field in the Town of Southport, where four candidates are seeking two open seats on the Town Board.

Candidates are Democrats Jimmy Russell and Ira Manhoff, and Republicans Timothy K. Steed and Daniel J. Williams. Williams and Steed also have Conservative Party backing.

Residents in the Town of Van Etten will have several choices to make, as there is a contest for town supervisor and four people running for two available Town Board seats, along with two candidates running to complete an unexpired term on the board.

In the supervisor race, longtime incumbent Democrat George Keturi faces a challenge from Angela Dennison, who is running on the Serving People Party line.

In the Town Board contest, candidates are Fred Swayze Jr., running on the Democratic and Common Ground party lines; Rebecca F. Wright, running on the Republican and Transparency party lines; Robin B. Ackerly, running as a Republican and also on the Clarity Now Party line; and Andrew A. Larison, who appears on the Rise and Shine Party line.

Two candidates are seeking to fill a two-year unexpired term on the Town Board. Republican T.J. Swartout, who is also running on the Stop the Waste Party line, is running against Better Days Party candidate Penny L. Flora.

There is an open town justice seat in the Town of Baldwin, and no candidates running. As with all races, voters will have an opportunity to write in names.
