Firefighters were called around 9:10 a.m. May 23 to a home at 186 Bancroft Drive for reports of a residential structure fire.

The first fire crews arrived within minutes and found active fire on the first and second floors of the two-story home, officials said.

While firefighters were responding, dispatchers received reports that three people were trapped inside the residence.

Firefighters rescued victims from second floor

Crews from the Barnard, Ridge Road and North Greece fire districts began rescue operations and searched the home.

Firefighters located two victims on the second floor and removed them from the house, officials said.

Additional mutual aid crews from Lake Shore, St. Paul, Irondequoit and Henrietta fire districts responded to assist with firefighting operations and scene support.

Monroe Ambulance transported three critically injured people to Strong Memorial Hospital.

Officials said two of the victims later died from their injuries. A third victim remains in critical condition in the hospital’s burn unit.

Six people were inside the home at the time of the fire, according to the Barnard Fire District.

Cause of fire under investigation

The Monroe County Fire Bureau is investigating the cause and origin of the fire.

Officials said no additional information was immediately available.

Fire district urges residents to check smoke detectors

In a statement, Barnard Fire District Chief Stephen Andrews offered condolences to the family affected by the fire and thanked responding agencies for their efforts.

The fire district also urged residents to regularly check smoke detectors and ensure at least one detector is installed on every level of the home.

Residents needing help installing smoke detectors can contact the Barnard Fire District for assistance, officials said.
