Following a fall season in which he was named Elmira Star-Gazette/Corning Leader Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year, Corning senior Bryce Hammond has secured the same recognition for indoor track & field.
Hammond is Boys Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year after a winter season in which he was part of top-10 relay finishes at the state level and at the national level.
He joined Sebastian Boutwell, Nick Ferratella, and Christopher Lawson in placing ninth in the 4-mile relay at the New Balance Nationals Indoor with a time of 17 minutes, 47.02 seconds.
That followed a fourth-place Division 1 finish for Hammond, Ferratella, Boutwell, and Charles Warner in the 3200 relay at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships in Staten Island. Their time was 7:57.84.
Hammond’s weekend at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex also included a 12th-place overall finish in the 3200 run (9:17.49).
Corning finished first in the 3200 relay (8:22.5) at the Section 4 state qualifier, where Hammond placed second in the individual 3200 with a time of 9:41.33. Lansing’s Trent Thibault, the 11th-place finisher in the event at states, topped the field at the state qualifier.
