Baseball

Division VI Northeast 2 sectional final

No. 24 Mogadore 9, No. 22 East Palestine 1

The Wildcats pulled away late with three runs apiece in the sixth and seventh innings. Maddox Smith delivered on the mound (tossing a 14-strikeout complete game), at the plate (3 for 4 with two runs) and on the bases (with two steals). Jaykob Dasco, Noah Hopkins and Tyler Pendergast added two hits apiece with Pendergast doubling twice. All told, the top six hitters in Mogadore’s lineup — Pendergast, Smith, Landen Williams, Jake Hopkins, Noah Hopkins and Dasco — combined to go 10 for 21 with nine runs and seven RBIs.

Mogadore will next travel to longtime Portage Trail Conference rival, top-seeded Lake Center Christian, for a May 27 district semifinal.

Division III Northeast 3 district semifinal

No. 8 Aurora 7, No. 16 Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin 4

The Greenmen racked up five runs on five hits in the first two innings and that proved enough to earn their first district title game berth since 2019. After Ryan Ziegler walked and Elijah Shim was hit by a pitch to start the game, Max Anzells ripped a single to the opposite field to plate Ziegler and Gabe Cooch chopped a single through the left side of the infield to score Shim. Drew Scott knocked home a third run, then Aurora scored twice more in the second on a Ziegler sac fly and another RBI single from Cooch. After the Lions drew within two (5-3), Shim plated two key insurance runs with a sixth-inning double deep to left.

Ryan Slisz and Cooch had two hits apiece for the Greenmen, who will next face No. 19 Chardon in a May 28 district final at Massillon, while Johnny Slisz didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning to get the win.

Division III Northeast 2 district semifinal

No. 1 Hoban 6, No. 22 Roosevelt 1

Teddy Maccarone recorded the 99th and 100th hits of his high school career in his Rough Riders finale. Owen Puhalla also had multiple hits for Roosevelt (16-9).

Matthew Ramsey tossed a complete game for Hoban, allowing just an unearned run and striking out 11. Ramsey also doubled, singled and drove in two runs at the plate, while Colt Andrews and Ben Rovnak added two hits apiece for the Knights.

Hoban will next face No. 13 Westlake in a May 28 district title game at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium.

Division IV Northeast 4 district semifinal

No. 9 Marlington 11, No. 18 Streetsboro 1

The Dukes scored three runs apiece in the first, fifth and sixth innings, highlighted by Matthew Baldwin’s two doubles and four RBIs. Ben Warner added three hits from the leadoff spot while Cole Jones, Logan Smith and Kaden Craddock also had multiple hits for Marlington. Brock Woods got the win, holding Streetsboro to a run on two hits in six innings of work.

Scott Wilson reached base twice for the Rockets with a double and a walk, driving in their lone run.

The Dukes will next face No. 5 Elyria Catholic in a May 28 district title game at the Pipe Yard.
