The woman who was seriously injured in a house fire that claimed the life of her grandson has died from her injuries, according to Penn Yan police.
Patricia Stenz, 78, died on Sunday, Sept. 21, two days after she and her 12-year-old grandson, Ethan Parker, were rescued from their burning home at 149 Cornwell Street in Penn Yan.
The fire broke out early Friday morning, Sept. 19. Police said Ethan awoke to find the house on fire and called 911. He then tried to alert his grandmother but was overcome by smoke and flames.
Both Ethan and Stenz were pulled from the first floor of the home by firefighters and flown to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse for treatment. Police were notified on Sunday that Ethan had died, and on Monday, Sept. 22, that Stenz had also succumbed to her injuries the previous day.
A family dog also died in the fire.
Ethan was a student at Penn Yan Middle School. The Penn Yan Central School District has made grief counselors available to students and staff.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to their family and friends,” Penn Yan police said in a statement.
A family friend has launched an online fundraiser to support the pair’s family, specifically a woman who is both Ethan’s mother and Stenz’s daughter, as she copes with the loss and aftermath of the fire.
The home was located on Cornwell Street, on the eastern side of the Village of Penn Yan near the northeast end of Keuka Lake.
Investigators determined the fire originated in the mechanical area at the bottom of a refrigerator, near the wiring and compressor.
