Section 1 swept the regional tournament, sending four of its teams on to the state semifinals this weekend in Cortland. The top-seeded favorites — Suffern, Nyack, Rye and Pleasantville — each captured section titles in their respective classes and went on to dominate their Section 9 counterparts to advance. Within those superb victories were outstanding individual performances. Representing each of the squads now competing for state championships, we’ve got four candidates for Girls Lacrosse Player of the Week, presented by White Plains Hospital.
Our previous poll winners this season were Sofia Conners (Somers), Fin Degl (John Jay-Cross River), Emily Butler (Tappan Zee), Amelia Walsh (Brewster), Olivia Saccomanno (Brewster), Lauren Rogers (White Plains), Ella Wendol (Putnam Valley), Scarlett Gristina (Pelham), Federica Ricciardella (Irvington) and Sadie Essick (North Rockland).
Read below about what the nominees accomplished last week, then cast your votes. The poll will be open until 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, and the winner will be featured on lohud sports social media accounts.
Maddie Becerra, Pleasantville
The sophomore had a goal and set a career-high with nine assists, including the 100th of her career, while leading the Panthers in a win over Highland to clinch the Class D regional title and secure their first ever berth to the state semifinals.
Abby Gould, Nyack
The sophomore erupted for a career-high 12 goals with three assists, fueling the RedHawks’ offense in a 20-17 win over Yorktown in the Section 1 Class B final last week. She then had seven goals and two assists in their regional final rout of Warwick as Nyack reached the state semifinals for the first time since 2010.
Nevin Sullivan, Suffern
The midfielder dominated the draw control in the Mounties’ section final and regional games, allowing them to play keep-away against Wappingers and Valley Central, leading to blowout victories. Suffern won each of the draws in the first half while holding Wappingers scoreless for the first 28 minutes, and then won 21 of 28 draw controls against Valley Central while building an insurmountable lead. Sullivan also had two goals and an assist in the Class A regional final.
Beau Whaling, Rye
The senior scored five goals and had a caused turnover and two groundballs in the Garnets’ 15-9 win over Pelham in the Section 1 Class C final. She then had four goals and an assist before sitting the fourth quarter of their 20-1 rout of Rondout Valley in the regional final, sending Rye to the state semifinals for the second time since 2024.
