Bloomfield senior Ashlyn Wright’s Bombers won the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class C softball championship game with a convincing 11-0 win over Section I’s Tuckahoe Saturday morning at Greenlight Networks Grand Slam Park in Binghamton.
Bloomfield (24-1), the two-time Section V champion, ended the season on a 17-game winning streak. They fell in the 2024 state final, but returned this spring to defeat perenial Class D state champion Deposit-Hancock — which won seven of the last eight state titles with an NYS runner-up finish in 2018 — 4-0 in Friday’s NYSPHSAA Class C semifinals, then nearly run-ruled Tuckahoe in the state title game.
“We knew we were out for blood,” said Wright, who’ll pitch at Army West Point upon graduation. “We really, really wanted this, and we would do anything to get it,” Wright said.
In 2024, Bloomfield’s first Section V championship season ended in the NYSPHSAA Class C final with a 1-0 loss to Section II’s Berne-Knox-Westerlo. Wright threw a one-hitter in the loss, then returned to toss another one-hitter in the state final, this time leaving with a shutout victory.
“It’s funny, for a school that had never won a sectional championship, when I saw them (as middle schoolers) our goal was immediately a state championship. … I knew they had it in them, and I felt so bad last year that I couldn’t get them across the finish line. But man were they prepared today and it was no stopping them,” Bloomfield coach Mark Jacobs said.
Wright, who tossed a one-hitter in the 2024 state final, threw another one-hitter Saturday against Tuckahoe. She struck out 12 batters and walked one. Wright helped her cause at the plate, too, as she went 4-for-5 with five RBIs. Freshman center fielder Sydney Falsone was 3-for-4 with a walk, a two-run triple, and four runs scored from the leadoff spot.
Bloomfield collected 12 hits as a team. Junior catcher Calla McCombs was 3-for-5 with a seventh-inning triple, then nearly scored the run-rule walk-off run but was called out on a bang-bang play at the plate during a Tuckahoe 4-1-2 double play. Marlee Poole and Sawyer Gallup each had two hits and an RBI. Abby O’Brien registered two hits, and Brianna Leitten hit an RBI-single.
Tuckahoe ended the season 174. The Tigers defeated Section VII’s previously unbeaten Ticonderoga (15-1) with a 3-0 victory in Friday’s other NYSPHSAA Class C semifinal.
