Work will begin in mid-August to upgrade sections of nearly 20 ailing Corning city streets.
Joseph Tongue, Corning’s Department of Public Works Superintendent, said Wenzel Contractors Inc., of Elmira Heights, recently entered the low bid of nearly $2.5 million to mill and upgrade sections of city streets.
“Work will start in the coming weeks, and everything should be wrapped up by Nov. 1,” Tongue said.
City Manager Mark Ryckman said the progress the City of Corning has made over the past several years to improve street conditions is mainly due to the additional funds the Corning City Council built into the base of the annual budget.

Some areas will feature complete rebuilds, upgrades to water mains, storm mains, catch basins, curbing, and underdrains.

In-house alley paving work will also be completed by the Corning City DPW crews.
