The Powerball jackpot for the Wednesday, Aug. 5 drawing was an estimated $768 million with a cash option of $341.6 million, according to the Powerball website. The growing jackpot is the ninth largest prize in the game’s history.
“The last time we saw a Powerball jackpot of this size was on Christmas Eve, with a $1.817 billion prize on the line,” Stephen Durrell, Powerball Product Group Chair and Kansas Lottery Executive Director, said in a news release. “But throughout the past year, we’ve had five Powerball jackpots won by players in seven different states, which goes to show a winning $2 ticket can be sold anywhere.”
The last jackpot prize – worth $20 million – was won on May 2 when two tickets split the grand prize, according to lottery officials.
