The Dansville Summer Swimming program wrapped up another successful season with its annual Loon Lake Swim on Wednesday, Aug. 5.
At 8 a.m., a record-setting group of 21 Mustang swimmers completed the challenging swim around the perimeter of Loon Lake in Wayland, marking the conclusion of the program’s five-week summer season.
This year’s event was especially significant as it marked the third consecutive year Mustang swimmers have taken on the lake swim. The 2026 group was the largest to participate in the tradition, demonstrating the continued growth of the program and the dedication of its athletes, according to a community announcement.
Throughout the five-week session, swimmers focused on stroke technique/mechanics, while building camaraderie in preparation for the upcoming high school season.
“The Dansville Summer Swimming program extends its sincere appreciation to Bernie and Paula Thoma and the Loon Lake community for once again graciously allowing the program to launch from their dock,” said Dansville varsity girls and boys swimming coach Ryan Conklin. “Additional thanks go to Jim Welch Sr. for his assistance throughout the event and to Captain Remington Welch, whose guidance and support on the water helped ensure a safe and successful swim around the lake.”
With the summer program now complete, the focus shifts to the upcoming varsity season. The Dansville Girls Varsity Swimming and Diving team is expected to be highly competitive this fall and will open its season with a home dual meet Sept. 8 against Gates-Chili at 5 p.m. The team looks forward to building on the momentum gained throughout the summer as it prepares for another exciting season.
“Our swim families are the foundation of this program. Their support, encouragement, and commitment have helped us grow each year, and we truly wouldn’t be where we are today without them,” said Conklin.
