Here is what’s happening in May.
Introduction to Mushroom Cultivation
Russ Welser, senior resource educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ontario County, will give a presentation on cultivating log-grown mushrooms, including shiitake and other specialty mushrooms, for home or small farm-scale production.
The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to noon May 2.
Participants will learn the proper tree species, timing, inoculation and management techniques, along with basic economics and marketing. They will have the opportunity to inoculate a log to take home.
The class is limited to 20 participants. Preregistration and payment of the $40 fee, by cash or check payable to CCE Ontario, is required by April 28.
Ontario County Master Gardeners plant sale
The annual plant sale will be 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. May 9 and will feature perennial and annual flowers, including woodland natives, and some tomato, pepper and herb plants. Some trees, shrubs and a few houseplants will also be available.
Master gardeners will be on hand to answer any questions. Bring boxes to carry home purchases.
Proceeds from the sale will benefit the educational outreach of the homes and grounds programming that volunteers perform.
Container Herb Garden Workshop
Master Gardeners Erika Pfeiffer, Michelle Bartell and Sue Craugh will guide participants through the world of gardening with herbs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. May 13.
Participants will be creating their own potted herb garden of rosemary, thyme and oregano to take home. Recipes for using herbs and other resources will be provided.
The fee is $20 per person. The class is limited to the first 20 registrants. Registration and fee must be paid by May 9.
