Construction on I-86 between Owego and Apalachin underway this season

Construction will continue this spring on the Interstate 86 corridor between Owego and Apalachin.

In a May 20 press release, the Town of Owego announced construction will begin May 27, starting with the Exit 65 westbound off ramp, which goes toward Owego. Because of this, the on-ramp will be closed until construction is finished.

Once the westbound portion is completed, construction will then begin on the Exit 65 eastbound ramp, according to the release. The eastbound portion is anticipated to begin in September.

Detours will be posted at Exit 64, which goes toward Owego, and Exit 66, which goes toward Apalachin, according to the release, “providing travelers with direction and routes of travel.” The Town of Owego will provide updates as the project progresses.

This construction is part of an ongoing $47 million project that began in March 2024.

In 2024, the westbound side of I-86 was closed, leaving both lanes to travel in the eastbound lane. In 2025, the same was done to the eastbound side of the interstate.
