Canandaigua earns Tree City USA status for 34th year

CANANDAIGUA — On previous Arbor Day celebrations, Canandaigua DPW workers may have had to wield a shovel or two to dig a hole and then plant a tree.

But on this Arbor Day, which the city marked on April 24, crews brought out the heavy equipment. Before a white spruce tree could be planted in the circle at the end of the City Pier overlooking Skenoh Island, what was left of the tree that was there before had to be removed.

But no problem, as crews made short work of the tree planting, which also marked Canandaigua’s designation by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA once again.

To receive the designation, which this year was the 34th consecutive year for Canandaigua, the city has to maintain a tree board or department, have a community tree ordinance, invest at least $2 per capita in urban forestry and observe Arbor Day each year.
