New York State Police recovered the body of Dalton Malmstrom, 18 of Nichols, Tioga County, from the river mid-afternoon and identified his body, said Trooper Aga Tinker.
Malmstrom has been missing since Saturday morning.
A search that included more than a dozen agencies from New York and Pennsylvania spanned three days.
What happened?
Malmstrom was last seen leaving his home in the 2100 block of East River Road in the town of Nichols around 7:45 a.m. May 9.
Family members told investigators he was not acting like himself before he left. Troopers said that Malmstrom left his home Saturday morning after an argument with family.
Where was Dalton Malmstrom recovered?
Dalton was last seen near his home along East River Road, close to the Susquehanna River in Tioga County.
The area is roughly halfway between Binghamton and Elmira in New York’s Southern Tier, just north of the Pennsylvania state border.
The New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team and its K9 unit located Malmstrom in the water “mid-river,” troopers said. Nichols firefighters assisted at the scene.
More than a dozen agencies from New York and Pennsylvania assisted with the three-day search.
Owego Free Academy graduate
The Owego Apalachin Central School District on Monday confirmed that Dalton Malmstrom was a 2025 graduate of Owego Free Academy.
“Our hearts are with the Malmstrom family during this unimaginably difficult time,” district officials said in a news release. “Our primary focus is ensuring that our students have the emotional support and resources they need to navigate the complex feelings that arise.”
District officials activated its crisis intervention plan to support students, staff and families impacted by the situation.
“Dalton remains a well-known member of the OACSD community, with relatives and friends currently enrolled at Owego Free Academy,” district officials said.
