Few moments in New York Jets history have aged more painfully than Bill Belichick’s abrupt exit.
Fans know the image well. A handwritten resignation on what has become one of football’s most infamous scraps of paper. A stunned organization… A division rival waiting in the wings… Then came the dynasty…
Six Super Bowls later, the ‘what-ifs’ still linger. What if Belichick had stayed as Jets head coach? What if the Jets, not the New England Patriots, had become the AFC East’s defining power?
For years, Belichick has largely avoided digging too deeply into that conversation. Recently, however, during an appearance on Pardon My Take, he offered one of his clearest explanations yet.
Honestly, Jets fans may not love hearing it. Belichick pointed directly to ownership uncertainty as the driving force behind his decision.
“I had worked for (Art) Modell, and the two trains coming down the tracks were (James) Dolan and Woody Johnson. And, I just felt like I don’t feel comfortable with whichever one of those guys ends up with the team. Nothing personal. I just had a bad experience, and either I’m going to work for a good owner or an owner that I felt comfortable with, who would share a vision with or… I’m not working for that.”
That’s brutally honest, and unfortunately, in some ways, understandable.
At the time, the Jets were navigating ownership uncertainty following Leon Hess’ passing. James Dolan and Woody Johnson emerged as the leading candidates to take over the franchise. Belichick had already lived through difficult ownership dynamics during his time with the Cleveland Browns under Modell.
Apparently, once was enough.
And just like that, one of the NFL’s great alternate histories took shape. Belichick left for New England. Quarterback Drew Bledsoe gets injured during a game versus the Jets from a hit from linebacker Moe Lewis. Tom Brady emerged. The Patriots became a dynasty. The Jets spent decades trying to climb out from underneath their thumb.
Sure, Gang Green landed some memorable punches along the way
. The 2010 playoff upset still lives fondly in franchise memory. Beating Belichick in his final Patriots game gave fans another brief moment of satisfaction, but let’s be honest. That doesn’t erase the larger reality.
For Jets fans, Belichick’s explanation probably won’t bring closure. If anything, it may deepen the sting because the most painful part of this story isn’t that Belichick left. It’s understanding exactly why he left.
