Batavia Downs barn fire leads to arson, burglary charges

City of Batavia Fire and Police departments responded April 22, 2026, to the stables at Batavia Downs for a reported structure fire, according to police.

Maintenance staff called 911 after seeing smoke coming from one of the barns. Employees also reported seeing a man walking away from the area.

Suspect detained at scene

Staff restrained the man after he allegedly attempted to flee, holding him until police arrived.

Arrest and charges

Following an investigation, police arrested Curt A. Buchinger II, 33, of Batavia. He is charged with third-degree burglary, fourth-degree arson and fourth-degree criminal mischief.

Court appearance

Buchinger was arraigned in Batavia City Court and released under the supervision of Genesee Justice. He is due back in court at a later date.
