Many people outside the Southern Tier aren’t aware, but Elmira and Chemung County produced some pretty famous and notable people.
Some of them were born locally, others achieved greatness after relocating to Elmira. And many of them are buried here — primarily at Woodlawn Cemetery, which itself has a long and storied history.
From one of America’s most famous and beloved authors, to an escaped slave who achieved several noteworthy accomplishments after settling in Elmira, from a standout sports hero who died far too young, to an early Hollywood film pioneer and others, here are some of the people who achieved greatness in Elmira and now have their final resting place here.
