Here are key dates, races for the May primary runoff election

The Texas primary runoff election is quickly approaching and early voting is only a couple of weeks away.

The March 3 primary left a few races undecided for the Democratic and Republican parties. In races where no candidate was able to reach 50% of the votes, a runoff will be held to decide candidates who will advance to the November General Election.

The runoff features some high-profile races across Texas, such as the Republican U.S. Senate race between incumbent U.S. Sen. John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton, but El Paso has its own local races to decide as well.

Here are some key dates to remember before the May runoff.

When is the runoff election?

The runoff will be held Tuesday, May 26, with polls open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Who can vote in the runoff election?

The primary runoff is open to all registered voters in El Paso, but voters will be required to vote in the same primary that they voted in during the March 3 primary.

Voters who did not vote in the March primary can cast a ballot in either the Democratic or Republican primary.

When is the last day to apply for a ballot by mail?

The last day to apply for a mail-in ballot for the May runoff is Friday, May 15. Applications must be received, not postmarked, by that date.

When is early voting?

Early voting for the primary runoff will begin Monday, May 18, and run through Friday, May 22.

What races are on the ballot?

U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-San Antonio, was slated for a runoff in the Republican primary for his seat but has since announced that he will not seek reelection amid an ongoing scandal, sending far-right YouTube commentator Brandon Herrera to the November General Election where he will face Democrat Katy Padilla Stout.
