Army hockey to open first season under Zach McKelvie on October 3 against Long Island

The Army hockey season – the first without a Riley family member behind the Black Knights’ bench in 74 years – will get underway on October 3, ironically against another Riley.

In April, Brendan Riley was hired as head coach of the Long Island Sharks, who visit West Point’s Tate Rink for an exhibition game – he is the son of recently retired Army head coach Brian Riley.

Zach McKelvie has assumed the Army head coach position, appointed ahead of Brian Riley’s decision to coach one final season. McKelvie is a former Army player and has been Brian Riley’s top assistant coach.

The 123rd season opener is October 4 when Army visits Union in nearby Schenectady. The non-league schedule includes home games with Massachusetts and Northeastern, and road contests with Northeastern, Stonehill, Dartmouth, Vermont and Long Island. Royal Military College of Canada visits for an international exhibition on January 24.
