The Army basketball program will christen the Lee & Penny Anderson Arena in St. Paul, Minn., on November 8, taking on new NCAA Division I transitioned member Saint Thomas. The Black Knights will take on the Tommies in a men’s and women’s doubleheader.
A Minnesota native, Lee Anderson has been a major donor for West Point athletics for years, as well as Saint Thomas. He is a 1961 graduate of West Point and former men’s basketball player for Army, leading the Cadets to its first three appearances in the National Invitational Tournament.
The Army men’s basketball position is named after Lee Anderson, and his name adorns the Anderson Rugby Complex at West Point, following a $6 million gift.
Saint Thomas completed a transition from NCAA Division III to Division I on June 23.
NCAA basketball teams may begin play as early as November 3. The 20-25-26 schedules have yet to be announced so Army could certainly open play before the Saint Thomas trip. Kevin Kuwik will be starting his third season leading the Army men, while Katie Kuester has taken over the women’s program.
