A 4-year-old child was critically injured in a crash on the Southern State Parkway on Long Island on Wednesday afternoon, according to New York State Police.
Car crash on Southern State Parkway
The one-car crash occurred when a westbound car veered off the parkway and struck trees near Exit 20 (Grand Avenue) in Nassau County around 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, troopers said. The driver and a 4-year-old passenger were trapped inside the car and were removed by emergency responders.
The child was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries and was listed in critical condition, troopers said. The medical status of the driver was not released.
Lanes closed for hours
The crash sparked troopers to close westbound lanes on the highway for around four hours to investigate at the scene.
