Here are three observations from the first day of Jets training camp:

Justin and Garrett make huge play

Let’s start with the good: quarterback Justin Fields and wide receiver Garrett Wilson quickly made the “play of the day” during the first practice.

According to the team’s website, it was the first snap of the entire practice in terms of team drills. During a 7-on-7 drill, Wilson tossed up a pass for Wilson and he came down and made a great play plus adjustment against a defender.

As NFL teams usually do, highlights are cropped during training camp. You can’t tell who was defending on the play, but it might have been cornerback Brandon Stephens–which is bad news for his stock.

Regardless, here is the play discussed below:

Shaky Justin otherwise

Aside from that play, it appeared to be an up-and-down output from Fields in his first outing as QB1 in New York. Per ESPN, Fields for 5-for-8 during 11-on-11 work but the outlet noted many of the completions he made were check downs. Some one plays where Fields might have had an open option down the field.

Playing it safe

The Jets had two players not on the field during Day 1 of camp: Special teamer Irv Charles and pass rusher Jermaine Johnson. That duo suffered season-ending ACL and Achilles injuries last season, respectively.

On Johnson, he said on social media is healthy. The team just is convincing him to play it safe and give his injury a few more days. Johnson could be back out there soon.

Both Charles and Johnson were placed on the PUP list.
