Three men in Steuben County have been accused of attacking a man at a Bath motel on Wednesday, according to police.
Police respond to unconscious man at Super 8
Bath police officers were called to the Super 8 Motel on West Morris Street in the Village of Bath just after 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, to investigate an intoxicated, unconscious man who may have fallen and hit his head, according to the Bath Police Department.
When officers arrived, they found the 39-year-old man inside the motel in an incapacitated condition. Police said he suffered severe injuries and was taken to an area hospital, where he was listed in guarded condition as of Thursday.
Investigators later determined the man appeared to be the victim of a violent assault. Police said the incident appeared to be isolated and targeted, and that the individuals involved knew one another.
Three men charged in gang assault
William Hargrave, 61, and Cheyne Bonnewell, 25, both residents of the Super 8 Motel, and Adam El-Gaaly, 34, who is homeless and originally from Rochester and was a guest of Hargrave, were each charged with first-degree gang assault, a felony, police said.
Hargrave was also charged with first-degree robbery, also a felony.
Police said all three men are accused of participating in the violent assault. Hargrave, a seven-time convicted felon in New York state, is also accused of possessing some of the victim’s personal property when he was arrested, officers said.
What happens next
All three men were arraigned Thursday and remanded to the Steuben County Jail. Hargrave is being held without bail, while the other two are being held in lieu of $150,000 cash bail.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.
